The school Parliament

This Tuesday, 10th of april, we have realiced an activity to teach the youngest about the main works of the parliament, like the European Unions parliament, and every thing about what they do in each sesion. that is why we hace recreated an europarliament meeting quite special: is this case, the children have been arguing about some issues related with the internet and the social networks. Ignacio has been explaning the basis of this activity.

After that, each class, in pairs, has given their own opinions about the different topics, respecting the speaking time.

Sometimes, these interventions have ended in an open argument among pupils, who defended their own opinions.

Finally, they have voted supporting or against the different topics, according to the arguments that they had presented previously.Sometimes there have been quite abtentions.

A race for the EU

Last Sunday, on the 6 of April, some partners of the group of Euroscola participated at the solidary race of our school with the EU flag, trying that pupils(and their parents too)learn about it.

The voices of the EU

In this video, we are showing the most important quotes of those people who have made the EU as we know now.

Europe for the youngest

These days we have been trying to expand the idea of the EU to the children: in three different ways:

  1. At first, we have interviewed a boy and a girl between 4 and 5 years old, Celia and Noa, about themes of Spain and Europe, like the flag. That´s what we have archieved:
  2. Secondly, we have done to the ESO children an easy survey about the current of the EU, or the European Parliament, for example. The winners, however, were the kids of 2º ESO. We have also shown them our blog, where the could search for information about the EU.

  3. In the end, we have also made a writing and drawing contest, and the awards were a diploma and books about the EU. These were the winners of the contest:

Winner of drawing contest for students of ESO

The 1 of April we propose 9 classes of ESO students a drawing contest related to the values of the European Union. The contest has been popular with many participants but can only choose one winner. This is the picture that we believe best represents the values of the EU, as the single currency, the union of people, cultural diversity, labor contracts between countries ...

It has proved a very productive activity to promote the European Union and bring it to all ages.

The ESA, the great unknown

Perhaps you've never heard of it , but the ESA is a gateway to the European continent space , easier said , NASA is in Europe. Its mission is to shape the development of Europe's space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe.

The ESA has 20 Member States: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain , Finland, France, Greece , Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg , Norway , Netherlands , Poland , Portugal, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Sweden and Switzerland.

The coordination of economic and intellectual resources of its members can carry out programs and outreach activities that could carry any European country individually.

location

The ESA headquarters is in Paris, where decisions are made about future projects . However, the ESA also has various centers across Europe , each with its specific function.
EAC , the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne (Germany ) .
ESAC , the European Space Astronomy Centre , located in Villanueva de la Cañada, Madrid.
ESOC , the European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt (Germany )
ESRIN , ESA 's center for Earth Observation in Frascati , near Rome (Italy ) .
ESTEC , the European Space Research and Technology in Noordwijk (Netherlands).

The EU institutions

The European Union has , since the entry into force of the Maastricht Treaty , a single institutional framework , which operates in representative democracy and in accordance with a method of community governance .

Within the broad framework of the European institutions , we can distinguish two groups:

On the one hand the political institutions , ie those in which lies the executive and legislative power of the Union . Here the European Parliament is elected every five years by the citizens, the Council of the European Union representing the governments of the Member States and the European Commission, a politically independent institution that represents and defends the interests of the Union as a whole, proposes legislation , policies and action programs.

On the other hand , the EU is composed of non- political institutions such as the Court , ultimately ensuring the implementation of Union law , the Court of Auditors , tax body in charge of supervising the proper administration of European funds, and finally the European Central Bank, responsible for the single monetary policy.

EU languages - A cultural source

The EU has 24 official languages , unless the number of member states in certain countries because several languages are spoken. Moreover, also because not all official languages are recognized as official languages of the EU. This is the case of the Luxembourg language , the official language of Luxembourg from 1984 and the case of the Turkish , the official language of Cyprus.

All official EU languages are working languages. The documents state that a member or a person sent to the institutions of the community may be written in any official EU language . The answer will be in the language in which the document was sent . Regulations and other documents of general importance, such as the Official Journal of the European Union , are written in all official languages . Legislation and documents of major public importance are written in the 24 official languages , but this only happens rarely .

The cost of maintaining this policy multilingual is of 1,123 million euros , representing 1% of the EU budget . This means that each inhabitant of the European Union pays 2.55 euros a year, a small price for the great diversity that is .

Erasmus +

Currently , people our age affect them much greater extent topics related to education than those who have to do , for example, fishing or agriculture. One of these examples is the subject of scholarships Erasmus , Erasmus + now , which came into force on January 1, 2014 . Was recently made a little side issue , compared to the controversy sparked some months ago, and we intend to explain here their basic features.

Erasmus Plus combines all the existing systems of EU funding in the areas of education, training , youth and sport ( yes, now also sport)
Lifelong learning programs (Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci, Comenius and Grundtvig)
Youth in Action
International cooperation programs (Erasmus Mundus , Tempus , Alfa , Edulink )
Program for cooperation with industrialized countries
Erasmus + includes, for the first time, measures to support the sport. A specific budget line will receive about 265 million euros from 2014 to 2020 , in order to help develop the European dimension in sport , fighting against doping, match-fixing , violence ... and promote voluntary activities in sport, among many scholarships cosas.Estas now become international , offering mobility both intra - European and extra- European .

One of the most important changes in this program is that the grant of European funds for European mobility is doubled or even tripled in some cases , from 115 € to 200 € to 300 € , depending on the standard of living of the country target . All this is to pay expenses in regard to tuition fees and other , along with a support for accommodation, food and travel. In any case these scholarships cover the total costs .

Similarly, those who want it (and who are selected by their universities ) can access the so-called " zero- grant " , thanks to which they will not have to pay tuition fees , although the handling , travel and accommodation.

Another very important change is the increase in mobility , from a maximum of two ( research and practice ) to a much higher number , now distributed in three cycles of studies. You can request money for various mobilities up to 12 months for each course of study . So this is somewhat confusing , so we put an example: in the first cycle (which is 12 months) , I can ask and get up to two mobilities of 4-5 months each, and a third of practices ( from 2 -3 months ) that would already seen 12 months . The next course could reorder the mobilities , and the next too. Despite these stockings months (based on financial aid ) , these placements are flexible and can be extended , financed by public or private sources (CCAA , banks , the beneficiary of the scholarship itself ...) and it is noteworthy students now receive much more money, about 1250 € for 5 months compared to € 950 for 8 months that were given before.

For more information on Erasmus + , you can consult both OAPEE page ( autonomous body of European educational programs ) and the European Commission (in English) , which are explained more in detail all aspects :

Interview with the President of the Parliament of Cantabria

On March 27 we interviewed the President of the Parliament of Cantabria , we did some questions like :
Ever Europa theme is addressed in Cantabrian Parliament ?
In the Parliament of Cantabria there are only three parties represented are the opinions of other minorities and other political parties addressed?
If the European elections are not autonomous constituency should we require Cantabrian representation quota lists for Europe?
Do you think a politician, MEP in this case, you need to know language? What and how many ?
Do you think that young people, through new technologies and / or social networks, are more involved in both Spanish and European politics ? Politicians use social media to get closer to the views of young people?
Do you think that young people have " European feeling "? What mechanisms or ideas would serve to reinforce and instill this feeling?
Do you think that Europe ignores the problems of Spain ? Seeing what happens to our southern border , one might think so.
Has been reflected ( economic ) improvements in Spain after the integration in the European Union ( EEC Antigua) ?
Following the entry of Eastern European countries , Spain is no longer receiving many European aid . How does this affect Cantabria ?

Shout: OUR VOICE MUST BE HEARD!

If we are the future of Europe must hear our voice. A Europe of the future can only be built with the values transmitted youth: Solidarity , tolerance and pluralism.

The European Union is not only a set of countries , an economic and political union. The European Union is also a set of people , a set of cultures , all different , but with common features that unite us. However, cultures are not static, but are continually changing , and each new generation brings its bit to help improve each and every one of them. So we, the youth , have an important role in our society . But we are not aware of its importance , we are not sufficiently informed or concerned by the EU. So we encourage our participation and approach to the world of the EU , starting with education in democracy, participation in the European parliament .

In a globalized world like ours , the role of social networks is becoming increasingly important , greatly increase participation dela society. But there is still a long road ahead , we must be able to create a real interest in EU.The future of Europe is in our hands.

And you , what can you do for the EU?

Discussion at the Parlaiment

The Esclavas Santander College participates with high school students in a session at the Parliament of 's "The voice of young people in Europe." Debate with IES "Bernado Escalante" and the College of Laredo "La paz" Torrelavega.

At our age, we should approach young people increasingly in politics, know both our rights and our duties, and the situation not only in our country but throughout the European Union as well. Thus, we must know about everything that happens around us these days, which is becoming easier thanks to the Internet. But do not take information from a single source, but must go to several, and also discuss, debate between us on these issues, so as to know the views of other people our age.
